Gila River Indian Community, Arizona

The Growing Readers & Developing Leaders (GRDL) program, managed by the Tribal Education Department and supported with a five-year federal Native Youth Community Project grant, has changed the reading habits of GRIC families by creating more than 100 local books and distributing them in innovative ways, including Little Free Libraries, a bookmobile, and at community-wide events like Mul-cha-tha.

FACE Library

The FACE Indigenous Library was developed over a five-year period with grant support from the Bureau of Indian Education. It includes the FACE Growing Readers Collection (100 books for ages Birth - 8 with narrations in 9 Indigenous languages) and the FACE Family Guide Collection (books for caregivers) as well as 3 Local Language Collections that are written in Navajo, Cherokee, and SW Ojibwe text. The Collection continues to grow through ongoing work with individual tribal communities.

The collections are culturally relevant, narrated picture books that entertain and educate children and adults.  The books provide unique audio support to families who speak, or are learning to speak, Indigenous languages. Simple audio buttons on each page play narrations by local, native speakers in warm, expressive voices. The pictures show real families going about their everyday lives, which makes First 100 books relatable and inspiring.

FACE Growing Readers

Spanning five years, ten states and 49 Bureau of Indian Education schools, the FACE Growing Readers Program distributed more than half a million books to families in Native American communities across the country.  Books were distributed on a weekly basis, directly to children’s homes or to their classrooms.

F100 Summer Institute

First 100 Books and Unite for Literacy provide communities with the opportunity to engage in Local Book and Language Publishing by coming together to trade stories, share best practices, and receive inspiration and hands-on learning.  The F100 Institute covers topics including writing, photography, illustration, translation, and narration, library curation, and book distribution.
